Installing a car subwoofer isn’t hard, but it does involve power wiring, so doing it correctly (and safely) matters. Below is a clear, beginner-friendly step-by-step guide that works for most cars and aftermarket subwoofer setups.
What You’ll Need
Equipment
Subwoofer
Amplifier (unless it’s a powered sub)
Subwoofer box (if not pre-loaded)
Wiring kit (amp power kit)
RCA cables
Speaker wire
Line output converter (LOC) if using a factory radio
Tools
Socket set / wrench
Wire stripper & crimper
Screwdrivers
Zip ties
Drill (optional)
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Disconnect the Battery (Important!)Open the hood
Disconnect the negative (–) battery terminal
This prevents shorts and electrical damage.2. Mount the Subwoofer & Amp
Place the subwoofer box in the trunk or cargo area
Mount the amp on:
The back of the rear seats
A sub box
A trunk side panel
⚠️ Make sure the amp has airflow and won’t move while driving.3. Run the Power Wire (From Battery to Amp)
Find a factory grommet in the firewall (or drill one carefully)
Run the power wire from the battery through the firewall and under interior panels to the trunk
Install the inline fuse holder:
Within 12–18 inches of the battery
Connect the power wire to the battery but leave the fuse out for now
4. Ground the Amp
Find bare metal near the amp location
Sand off paint if needed
Bolt the ground wire securely
Ground wire should be as short as possible (under 18″)
5. Run RCA Cables & Remote Wire
Aftermarket Head Unit
Plug RCA cables into the sub/pre-out
Run them along the opposite side of the car from the power wire
Factory Radio
Use a Line Output Converter (LOC)
Tap into rear speaker wires
Run RCAs to the amp
Remote Turn-On Wire
Connect to:
Blue/white wire on aftermarket radio
LOC remote output
This tells the amp when to turn on
6. Connect the Subwoofer to the Amp
Run speaker wire from amp → subwoofer terminals
Match polarity (+ to +, – to –)
Make sure impedance (ohms) matches the amp’s rating
7. Set Amp Controls (Very Important)
Gain: Start low (don’t treat it like a volume knob)
Low-Pass Filter (LPF): Set around 80–100 Hz
Bass Boost: Keep OFF or very low
This prevents distortion and blown subs.8. Reconnect Battery & Test
Insert the fuse near the battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal
Turn on the car
Play music at low volume
Confirm:
Amp turns on
Subwoofer plays clean bass
Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Skipping the fuse
❌ Using seat bolts for grounding without sanding
❌ Running power and RCA cables together
❌ Turning gain too high
❌ Loose subwoofer boxPowered Subwoofer? (Quick Note)
If you’re installing a powered sub, steps are the same but:
No separate amp wiring
Smaller power wire
Often easier for beginners
